Hot Air Club
Throughout the year
The Florence Griswold Museum presents the "Hot Air Club," named for the free-spirited Lyme artists who challenged artistic and social traditions at the turn of the 20th century. The Hot Air Club holds programs throughout the year that combine fun and socializing with a lively mix of art and culture-related topics.
Lecture Series & Symposia
Scheduled throughout the year
A series of lectures and gallery talks accompany each exhibition. Both curators and scholars directly involved with the exhibition as well as outside sources are scheduled for these adult learning opportunities. Although art and history are often featured, the Museum looks for scholars from other disciplines to enhance the educational offerings whenever possible and appropriate. The Museum also collaborates with outside organizations such as the Antiquarian & Landmark Society to present a series of lectures. Lectures often are held in the conference room at Marshfield House or in the galleries, but are moved to the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme when dictated by audience size.
Examples of recent lecture series and speakers includes:
Hildegard Cummings, Art Historian and Scholar; Home Sweet Home: Anthem for the Connecticut Impressionists
Elizabeth Mankin Kornhauser, Krieble Curator of American Painting iand Sculpture, Wadsworth Atheneaum; Childe Hassam and Connecticut Impressionism
Dr. Bruce Chambers, Director of the Metcalf Raisonee Project; May Night: Willard Metcalf in Old Lyme
