Meet guest curator of the Metcalf exhibition Bruce Chambers as he share his insights into this remarkable painter including the connections between Metcalf’s naturalist collections and his creativity. A book signing of the new exhibition catalogue will conclude the event.

Collecting Nature and the Nature of Collecting
Harriet Ritvo, Ph.D., Arthur J. Conner Professor of History and Head of the History Faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
By the latter part of the nineteenth century, Americans and Europeans were more likely to cherish nature than to fear it.  One way that they expressed this passion was though collecting:  impressive assemblages of plants, animals, and rocks adorned many Victorian homes.  In selecting and displaying their specimens, collectors revealed not only their fascination with nature, but also their aesthetic sensibilities and their ideas about the organization of the natural world.

A Fluttering Obsession: Daytime Gems and Nighttime Jewels
John Himmelman, Author and Illustrator
Join fluttering-creatures aficionado John Himmelman for an illustrated
lecture on the butterflies and moths of Connecticut, the ancestors of which were collected by Willard Metcalf nearly 100 years ago.  Himmelman is the author of numerous books and articles on nature subjects.  He will conclude his talk around Metcalf's cabinet of curiosities in the gallery before a walk out into the garden to see what's fluttering.

Dr. Richard Jaynes, Plant Breeder and Horticulturalist, Broken Arrow Nursery, Hamden
Join Dr. Richard Jaynes, author of “Kalmia: Mountain Laurel and Related Species” for a slide lecture detailing the variations in color and form of the Connecticut State flower. He will conclude his talk discussing the mountain laurel featured in Hassam’s painting of “June” in the gallery.  A sale of mountain laurel to follow presentation.

A Yankee Impressionist in a Changing Nation: Willard Metcalf and Modern America

Townsend Ludington, Boshamer Distinguished Professor of American Studies and English, Emeritus, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Join Professor Ludington for an exploration of the notion of “American” in Metcalf’s Impressionism. Metcalf's paintings capture many of the traditional themes and values that were tested as the United States emerged as a leading industrialized nation during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Music of May Night: Songs from the Musical “A Woman of a Certain Age”

The musucal, A Woman of a Certain Age, was inspired by the story of Miss Florence and the artistic spirit of Old Lyme.  One song, May Night, was based on Willard Metcalf’s masterpiece.  Steve Metcalf and Lary Bloom will host this evening of song. Enjoy the music in direct proximity to the people and paintings that inspired it.

It’s Only Natural!: Artistic Explorations for Children

Children ages 7-12 are invited to explore the Metcalf exhibition through a variety of nature-based creative programs. Each 90-minute session will focus on a single nature concept, technique or subject.  May 15 -- Paint, Collect, and Arrange Your Own Cabinet of Curiousity; June 12 -- Sketching & Collaging with Nature; and July 17 -- Painting Wooden Eggs and Weaving Bird Nests.

Impromptu Encounters with Art: A Creative Drop-In Program

Visitors can enjoy painting along the Lieutenant River with authentic art-making materials including a palette, canvas board, paints and brushes.  Also, check-out one of the Naturalist Knapsacks and explore the Museum grounds with the tools and reference materials of a naturalist!

Winged Migrations:  Three Bird Excursions in Lyme
Co-Sponsored by the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center in Mystic

Join Maggie Jones, Executive Director of the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center in Mystic, to identifying the birds of Lyme, many on their migration journeys.  We will search from shore to forest to meadow and seek out the species of birds Willard Metcalf might have seen while collecting eggs and nests for his naturalist collection.  Dress for nature walking and bring a pair of binoculars!

It’s Wild!:  Cartooning Nature Workshop

Daniel Stegos, Artist and Illustrator
Learn the art of cartooning using the natural world as your inspiration.  Artist and book illustrator Daniel Stegos will lead this four-hour hands-on workshop for children ages 9-12.  Using Metcalf’s art and the Museum’s grounds for inspiration, participants will develop their own characters and storyline for a cartoon drawing.  Bring a brown bag lunch.

The inspiration from nature continues!  Just as Willard Metcalf was inspired and enthralled with the natural world, artist and book illustrator Daniel Stegos will be in the exhibition gallery creating a work of art based on Metcalf’s naturalist collection.  Come watch Stegos at work and talk to him about the joys and challenges of working from nature.

A "Mothing" We Will Go:  Moth Talk and Watching Event
John Himmelman, Author and Illustrator
Willard Metcalf gathered moths by attracting them with candlelight for his naturalist collection.  Join moth expert John Himmelman, author of Discovering Moths: Nighttime Jewels in Your Own Backyard, for a slide lecture on the moths of Connecticut followed by an adventurous evening of "mothing." Lure the nocturnal creatures out of the nighttime sky for temporary examination and study.  Bring a bottle of wine to enjoy under the summer stars.

Gather family, friends, and neighbors and be our guests for the Museum’s second annual May Day is Free Day.  Explore new exhibitions of art and history, wander historic gardens, make art in the Education Center, and visit the historic Chadwick studio and more.

This summer’s featured artist Willard Metcalf collected birds eggs to add to his naturalist collection.  Share the excitement of collecting eggs with your little one at the Museum’s first Mother’s Day Egg Hunt. Hundreds of eggs, each one containing a fun-fact or candy treat, will be hidden on the Museum grounds. Come see how many you can find!

Enjoy a concert by Boston-based Irish root-rock band, The Johnny Come Latelies, on the banks of the Lieutenant River. Their original, high-energy music is a mix of folk-rock and traditional sounds.
