An American Place: The Art Colony At Old Lyme
At the end of the nineteenth and into the early years of the twentieth century, summer art colonies spread throughout America, and especially along the New England coastline. The village of Old Lyme, Connecticut became the setting for one of the largest summer art colonies in America, attracting many leading painters — Henry Ward Ranger, Childe Hassam, and Willard Metcalf to name a few — who were in the vanguard of the Impressionist movement in America. This presentation also includes images of the recent comprehensive restoration of the Florence Griswold House and what it means for telling the story of an American place.

The Painted Splash: Impressions of Water by the Painters of the Lyme Art Colony
Over 100 years ago, artists from New York began to congregate in the boardinghouse of Florence Griswold in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Lured by the natural beauty of the small New England town, these artists would spend their days painting the surrounding landscape, including the rivers and grassy marshes – capturing the play of light upon the water. This presentation tells about the development of the Lyme Art Colony through the lens of “water” and concludes with images of the recent comprehensive restoration of the Florence Griswold House and what it means for telling the story of an American place. |
