A Letter to Our Visitors

William Chadwick, Front Parlor, Florence Griswold House
Florence Griswold Museum
Dear Friend,
Imbued with the spirit of a remarkable woman, the Florence Griswold Museum is a historic place that fostered an authentic American art.
During the early decades of the 20th century, the Lyme Art Colony, centered in Miss Florence Griswold's boarding house, became America's most famous summer art colony. Today this museum of art, history, and landscape is known as the Home of American Impressionism.
More than the sum of its parts, the Florence Griswold Museum awaits your visit. It is at once a historic house. An art gallery with changing exhibitions. A garden paradise. An immortalized landscape timelessly linked to Impressionism. A place of endless discovery for families. The Museum houses a renowned collection of American art and the artifacts of a profoundly American town. Alive with the memories of a light-filled past, this beautiful country "where pictures are made," as colony founder Henry Ward Ranger put it, welcomes visitors from around the world.
I hope your visit with us today is pleasurable and that you will return again and again to stay current with the Museum's activities. And, in the tradition of the artists of the colony who once stayed here, won't you check in by signing our guest book? We love hearing from our visitors!
Yours truly,
