DESCRIPTION:with Victoria Johnson\, Author \nEvent takes place at The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center\, 300 Main Street\, Old Saybrook\, CT \nFREE but reservations required – PLEASE REGISTER HERE \nFor Live-Stream of the Lecture PLEASE CLICK HERE \nPulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist Victoria Johnson shares the dramatic and consequential life of the artist Frederic Church\, whose footsteps she followed around the globe for her “absorbing” (Ron Chernow) and “thrilling” (Andrea Wulf) new biography of Church\, Glorious Country. Church’s curiosity\, bravery\, and passion for nature drove him to explore the world\, but it was his astonishing talent that allowed him to bring the world to America at a time when landscape photography was in its infancy and most of his countrymen and countrywomen would never see a different country or continent. Exhibited to acclaim abroad\, Church’s blockbuster paintings persuaded skeptical critics that the so-called “New World” could\, in fact\, give birth to towering artists and furnish the subject matter for great art. At Olana\, his estate on the Hudson\, he forged an enduring masterpiece of architectural\, interior\, and landscape design. A master artist and citizen\, Church brought the world to America\, and America to the world. Presented in Frederic Church’s bicentennial year. \nVictoria Johnson is the author of three books\, including the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist American Eden: David Hosack\, Botany\, and Medicine in the Garden of the Early Republic. She holds a doctorate in sociology from Columbia University and an undergraduate degree in philosophy from Yale. She is Professor of Urban Policy and Planning at Hunter College of the City University of New York. \nA light reception and book signing event to follow presentation. \nThe Thorne Lecture is an endowed lecture series that allows the Museum to invite distinguished speakers and thinkers to share their work with the Florence Griswold community. It is named in memory of Samuel Thorne\, who served as the Museum’s President in the 1950s. Mr. Thorne’s widow and son established this signature program in 1995.

SUMMARY:ADULT CERAMICS WORKSHOP: Making a Mosaic Tile
DESCRIPTION:Three Class Sessions (March 6\, 13\, 20)\, 1-3pm   \nwith Paul Halferty\, Master Potter and Co-Owner of Lily Work Tile\, Old Lyme \n$275 (Members 10% discount); limited enrollment \nExplore your creative side by making a 12″ x 12″ mosaic wall tile from start to finish. Use a prepared pattern or come up with your own design. Guided by local artisan Paul Halferty\, participants will work with earthenware clay and design\, cut\, glaze\, reassemble\, and grout a unique mosaic wall tile. All three workshop sessions will be held in the Hartman Education Center at the Florence Griswold Museum. \nThroughout the three-session workshop\, Paul provides personalized support to help students feel confident as they create a one-of-a-kind mosaic piece perfect for display. Paul guides students step by step through the entire mosaic-making process. This workshop is a great way to get started working confidently with clay\, learn new techniques\, and tap into your creative potential in a relaxed\, fun\, and friendly environment. \nPaul Halferty earned an BFA in ceramics from Tyler School of Art and Architecture in Philadelphia before working for the famed Moravian Pottery and Tile Works in Doylestown\, PA. There he spent a decade honing his craft as mold-maker\, ceramist\, and teacher. Paul is a kindred spirit to the skilled American nineteenth-century Arts and Crafts Era craftsmen. DESCRIPTION:The Web They Wove: Women & Their Wardrobes During New England’s Revolution \nwith the Dirty Blue Shirts\, Historians\, Scholars\, and Artists \n$15 (Members 10% discount) \nPurchase tickets here \nUnderpinning the sensationalism of battle reports and broadsides regarding the Revolution is the often-silent steadiness of women’s work with textiles. The choices they made every day about fashion\, fabric consumption\, and creation drove the course of war just as determinedly as any congress. As southern New England commemorates the 250th anniversary (semi quincentennial) of the War for Independence\, it is these local lives dressed fully in wool or spun silk that continue to inspire creativity\, resilience\, and empathy in us today. From the mythology of homespun to legends of midnight rides in red cloaks and calashes\, the Dirty Blue Shirts share stories of women who waged war on multiple fronts as well as a look at what they wore as their worlds turned upside down. \nThis program is presented by costumed historians and includes reproduction clothing pieces & fabric samples as well as a PowerPoint presentation with images of extant originals. \nThis exhibition is made possible with the generous support of the Samuel Freeman Charitable Trust\, the David T.
