Museum staff can give lectures, presentations, or educational offerings on history, art history, the Lyme Art Colony, our exhibitions and collections, and other selected topics.

Let the Florence Griswold Museum come to you! The Museum’s artistic staff is available for educational activities presented at your location.
All programs are available to book for schools, adult education programs, senior centers, libraries, and any group that wants an art-making experience.
Should you have a program in mind that is not listed below, please contact Julie Riggs to discuss. The Museum can personalize a multimedia art program to fit your unique needs or curriculum.
FLAT FEE: $400* includes instruction, all materials, and two hours of creative fun for up to 25 attendees.
*A $50 surcharge for travel expenses will be added for destinations beyond 50 miles from the Museum.

Altered Books
Have a ball making art out of an upcycled older book. One of our most popular classes. Learn how to turn an unwanted book into a 3-D piece of keepsake art. An abundance of supplies are included in this fun and enriching program. Geared for grades 6 and up; beloved by children and adults alike. Alternatively, learn how to make your own small bespoke accordion book.

Clay Postcards
Make a landscape with clay on a postcard sized canvas board with bright colors. This is a fun and different way to work with clay. A colorful miniature 3-D landscape experience that is great for all ages!

Faerie House Making
Create your own faerie dwelling with natural supplies such as moss, lichens, tree bark, branches, leaves, acorns, and pinecones. This magical class is fun and welcoming for all ages and skill levels. The Museum’s annual Wee Faerie Village each autumn is the highlight of the year for many visitors – keep that spirit alive all year long with your own keepsake faerie house!

Mailable Art Cards
Create your own unique and bespoke greeting cards rivaling the best commercial products! Handmade greetings with a personal touch that are sure to impress and delight any recipient. Put it in the mail or put it in a frame–your choice!

Paint a Seasonal Scene on a Wooden Palette
Paint a beautiful summer or winter scene on a wooden artist’s palette. Be inspired by the artists of the Lyme Art Colony, who painted scenes inspired by nature on wooden doors and panels in the historic Griswold boardinghouse, to create your own take-home masterpiece!

Painting: Impressionism 101
Learn how to paint in the style of the Lyme Art Colony artists who lived and worked at Miss Florence Griswold’s boardinghouse (now the Florence Griswold Museum) beginning in 1899. Beginner to Advanced levels available, for all ages. Celebrate the Museum’s legacy as the Home of American Impressionism by learning to paint in this beloved style yourself!

Relief Printmaking
Create a quality print similar to a wood block or linoleum print without the sharp tools. Using a pen, sheets of styrofoam, and special water-soluble paint, images you create are rolled onto colored card stock. The result is frame-worthy art. Van Gogh printmaking is one of our particular specialties. Safe and fun for all ages!

Upcycled Picasso Faces
This project is pure 3-D fun! Assemble a work of art from recycled materials in the Cubist and Surreal style of Pablo Picasso. Use cardboard, pastels, and much more to express your inner artist on these unique and special creations.

Watercolor Monsters
Using watercolor paint and straws, “monsters” emerge from fun watercolor shapes in any color you choose. Give the creations names, personalities, and decorative accents. Keep them together, or cut them up to create your own monster book with a supplied sketchbook and glue stick! Delightful for all ages and skill levels.
